Noise cancelling, honestly compared

We wore four sets of headphones on the same flight and the same commute. Here is what actually differed.

Phonfy editorial

Marketing copy for noise cancelling is close to meaningless, so we did the boring thing: the same flight, the same bus route, the same open-plan office, four sets of headphones, measured and described.

Low frequencies are a solved problem

Every set we tested removed engine drone almost entirely. If your use case is long-haul flying, the cheapest ANC headphone in our catalogue does the job the expensive one does.

Voices are where money shows

Speech sits in a frequency range that is genuinely hard to cancel without also cancelling the music. Here the gap is real: the Sony and the Bose reduce conversation to a murmur, while the budget sets leave it clearly intelligible.

Comfort decides the winner

After four hours the objective measurements stop mattering. Clamping force and earcup depth decide whether you keep them on. The Bose won our long-haul test not because it cancels more, but because we did not take it off.

The recommendation

For flights, buy on price. For an open-plan office, buy the best cancellation you can afford. For all-day wear, go to a shop and put them on your head first.
